Bag Sizing Guide

Measuring a bag

  • The width of the bag is always taken to be the side that opens, so this is normally, but not necessarily, the shortest side
  • The width of the bag is given before the length
  • The strength/thickness of the bag is given last and is usually expressed in “gauge” ( 100 gauge = 1/1000 of an inch)
  • The size of the bag is given as : Width (inches) x Length (inches) x Thickness (gauge)

Measuring a bag with a gusset

  • Some bags have a gusset on the bottom to allow a wide product to fit in.
  • Other bags have a gusset on the side to give the bag a wider opening
  • A side gusset is expressed as a bag being x” wide opening to y” wide.
e.g. A refuse sack described in inches as 14x26x44 means it is 14″ wide opening out to 26″ wide when opened and the length would be 44″.
  • A bottom gusset is expressed in a different way. If a carrier bag is 15″x18″+3 this means the carrier is 15″ wide by 18″ long with a bottom gusset of 3″.

Measuring a bag for lining a box

  • Meaure the width, depth and height of the box to be lined
  • The depth should be the shorter side
  • To determine the Width (W) of the bag add 1″ to the width of the measured box
  • To determine the Depth (D) of the bag add 1″ to the depth of the measured box E.g If the box size is 18″ wide X 12″ deep X 14″ high the bag dimensions are as follows: Width 19″ x Depth 13″ x Length 33″
  • The Length (L) of the bag is deterrmined by adding the depth plus 1″ to the height plus 1!. Add another 5″ to allow coverage of the contents of the box
Bags Lined

Measuring a bag for a round container

  • Measure the diameter and height of the container to be lined
  • To determine the circumference (C) of the container, multiply the diameter by 3.14
  • To determine the Width (W) of the bag, divide the Circumference (C) by 2 & add 1″ for a looser fit
  • To determine the Length (L) of the bag, add the diameter to the height.
  • Add 5″ for overhang E.g If the container size is 12″ (Diameter) X 30″ (height), the bag dimensions are as follows: Width (W) 20″ X Length (L) 47″
Round Bags

Measuring a bag for a square container

  • Measure the width, depth and height of the container to be lined. The depth should be the shorter side
  • To determine the width (W) of the bag, add the width and depth. Add 2″ for a looser fit
  • To determine the length (L) of the bag, add half the depth to the height. Add 5″ for overhang E.g If the container size is 14″ (wide) X 32″ (high), the bag dimensions are as follows: Width (W) is 26″ X length (L) is 42″
Square Bags

Measuring for a pallet cover

  • If the pallet size is 40″ (wide) X 36″ (deep) X 50″ (high), the cover dimensions aer as follows: Width (W) is 42″ (D) is 38″ Length (L) is 68″
  • Measure the width, depth and height of the pallet to be covered. The depth should be the shorter side.
  • To determine the Widh (W) of the cover, add 1″-2″ to the width of the pallet
  • To determine the Depth (D) of the cover, add 1″-2″ to the depth fo the pallet
  • The length (L) of the cover is determined by adding half the depth to the height.
