The power of recycling to society and nation
The separation and collection of materials that otherwise would be considered waste, the processing of remanufacturing of these items into new products, and the use of the re-cycled products to complete the cycle is known as re-cycling. Recycling has proven to be a great power to our nation and society.
There are significant environmental and economic benefits associated with recycling. Recycling helps in creating jobs, it is more cost effective than trash collection; it reduces the need for new landfills, saves energy, and supplies valuable raw materials to industry. It takes 95% less energy to process recycled aluminum as compared to making it from scratch. The numbers are similarly as efficient for other popular resources such as plastic (70%), steel (60%), paper (40%) and glass (30%). The math is easy: recycling these five basic resource staples our society depends on can save a total of 295% of toxins emitted in to the atmosphere, emissions that contribute to global warming, smog, acid rain, and water contamination.
Recycling has been a power to our nation as it provides great financial gains. There are many industries in the world today that are doing significant amount of business using recycling products. We as individuals also can contribute great deal in this phenomenal process. There are a lot of things lying around the house that we no longer want or need that might just end up in a dump site somewhere, that we can recycle and earn money from.
Recycling creates jobs – Incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates one job; land filling 10,000 tons of waste creates six jobs; recycling 10,000 tons of waste creates 36 jobs.
Recycling is Earth-friendly – No matter how safe and efficient our landfills are being billed to be, the possibility of dangerous chemicals coming from the solid waste deposited in these landfills, contaminating underground water supply is always present. Combustion or incineration of our solid waste is effective and energy-generating, but we pay the price in increased air pollution. So keep on recycling and in the process help the nation to go green.
